This article has some good pointers. Basically, you have to be active on the topic on your own blog and other people's website and set a link back to your own site. He also gave many other reference sites which can improve your page hits. Worth reading.

In our site, a plug-in has been set up so you just include the { multithumb} tag at the beginning of your article. Then insert images as what you would do nomally, you do not need to specify the image width, height, and border. That's it!
We feel good about what we're doing - create websites and make them look good and useful. We just finished the initial design and setup of a Chamber of Commerce site. This is what we can do in a time frame of 7~10 days!
